Mayor Buckley Pushing Plan

Gavin with his new “Saltie” friend

Annapolis (SPP) – Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley’s plan to make Spa Creek “pristine” and swimmable during his first term took its first concrete steps yesterday as he announced he had reintroduced crocodiles to the area.

During pre-historic times, the Chesapeake Bay was full of giant crocodiles. Even as late as a hundred years ago, it wasn’t unusual to spot alligators, who belong to the crocodilian family, in the bay and they sometimes still make their way as far north as the lower bay in Virginia. Buckley hopes these vicious beasts will stay for good this time.

“We’ve already imported ten crocodiles from Australia. They will help to improve water quality by killing and eating Nutria, an invasive species that damage our water quality. They will also eat any other carcases that happen to fall into the water, thus helping to get our water clean. In addition, they enjoy eating Phragmites as a snack after they have filled up on meat,” Buckley stated.

When asked why he decided to introduce Salt Water Crocodiles, known to be the most vicious and dangerous of crocodiles, Buckley stated that they wanted to “introduce a hardy animal, one that is likely to survive the winter.” He said, “Salties are the toughest crocs I know. If any croc can survive here, it’s them.”

Buckley stated that the Chesapeake Bay Foundation endorsed his plan, although no representative of the organization was present for his press conference.

Buckley also noted that he had purposely put these crocodiles behind Bates Middle School with the hope that the school kids would get a chance to see them. “Most of these kids are never going to get to Australia to see one up close. Now is there chance.”

The Mayor indicated that they intended to introduce several more crocodiles into Spa Creek in the coming weeks. And come early summer, Buckley announced that he planned to jump off City Dock for a swim to show how much cleaner the water had become.
